using an xbox 360 controller with a computer?

I’m aware that you can use an Xbox 360 controller with a Windows XP and Vista computer. So I tried connecting the wireless 360 controller that came with my Xbox 360 to my Windows Vista 64-bit using the USB-cord that came with it.

After installing the driver I downloaded from MS for the controller, the computer still didn’t respond to the controller (I unplugged my Xbox so the controller wouldn’t turn it on). Then I found out that MS sells these special 360 controllers that are “for Windows”, i.e. they work with PCs.

My question is whether or not it is possible to use a 360 controller that came with an Xbox 360 console with a PC. If it is possible, then how is it done?

Thanks in advance!

  1. Xbox 360 controllers and computers can be temperamental a wireless controller (in my experience) will not connect at all, even with a Plug and Play cable wired controllers on the other hand, do work, but they can be fickle to install the necessary components to function properly

  2. It can.

The USB-cord you are describing doesn’t sound like this though:

    You need that.
