I have the one where it has a switch on the cord that says TV or HDTV. Do I still have to buy the Xbox 360 HDMI AV Cable that costs 50 bucks?

  1. oh please, i’ll keep this short. You don’t need and HDMI. The only advantage (I’ve used both) is the graphics and sound are in one cable. If you have component, then you have HD. On that switch you are talking about, it also has an OPTIC cable ;lug. That will provide just as good sound as HDMI. That’s what I use. Components and Optic cable.

  2. No, its different.

The older model of Xbox 360 does not have the HDMI port on the console. THe new model has it.

The end of the HDMI cable are different. Make sure your tv support HDMI cable also.

  3. Starting November of last year, all 360s came with a HDMI port. Before that, only the Elite models had them.

The 360 is capable of outputting video resolutions up to 1080p. If you have a HDTV that can accept 1080p and has a HDMI port, you may want to consider getting the HDMI cable kit.

Otherwise, the HD-AV cable that comes with the 360-Pro or is sold separately, uses component video. While component video is capable of carrying a 1080p signal, most HDTVs’ component video ports are only capable of 1080i.

Remember that most 360 games only support 720p, so even using the HD-AV cable will be fine if you don’t want to go buy the HDMI cable.

If you do decide to use HDMI, you don’t need to buy the 360 HDMI cable. Any plain standard HDMI cable will do. Don’t buy the overpriced cables from Monster or other brands. A generic, no-brand HDMI cable for $7-10 is all you need.

One final note. HDMI carries both an audio and video signal. So if you just want to use your TV’s speakers, you only need that 1 cable. However, if you want to get surround sound from your 360, you’ll still need to leave the HD-AV cable connected to the 360 – not for its video or audio cables, but because the HD-AV connector is where the optical audio port is. Buy a cheap optical audio cable and connect it to to your 360’s HD-AV connector and to your surround sound system.

The 360 HDMI cable comes with a HD-AV connector with just audio cables and the optical audio port on it, but since you already have the HD-AV cable, you might as well save $40 and just buy a generic HDMI cable.

  5. Not every 360 has an HDMI output. The launch 360 didn’t have HDMI output. I also believe the Halo 3 edition 360 didn’t have HDMI output. The Elite were the first 360 to start getting HDMI output.

You don’t have to get HDMI cable to see in HD. You can use component cable which is included with the premium 360.

The Elite came with HDMI-component-composite cables.

If you have the arcade and you have a HD TV, then you need to get either the component or the HDMI cables.

If the 360 HDMI output looks like a normal HDMI output, then you can just any HDMI cable that you want.
