If you have ever seen the notorious Red Ring of Death on an Xbox 360 console, you know the frustration it can cause in the owner. This error, though the result of several different malfunctions, occurred because the unit would overheat and seize up. Without a warranty, you can still fix the problem so here is a quick Microsoft Xbox 360 repair guide.

Of course, the first thing you have to do is open the console to get to the motherboard. Once you extract the motherboard, turn it over to locate the two X-clamps on the underside. This is where the heat sink is housed, as well as the CPU and the GPU. Carefully remove the clamps and the heat sink and clean them thoroughly, but remember that they are intricate electronic components, so take special care to preserve them. You need to clean the heat sink, especially because anything that can get onto it while it is functioning can interfere with its conductive ability. You will also need to reapply a new thermal compound to the heat sink to ensure that it maintains insulation. Once all parts are clean, reattach the x-clamps with brand new screws that are not heat sensitive; the original ones would erode from overexposure to high temperatures. Fasten the screws tightly and replace the console shell, and you should be done.

If this still isn’t enough to solve the problem, it might be that you have the old graphics card in your system. The original card that Microsoft designed also had a problem with overheating, and thus would result in the Red Ring of Death. Microsoft has since replaced these with a better, outsourced chip, but if you need to do this repair yourself, you will unfortunately need to pay for it yourself too. However, this is still better than replacing your whole system.
