In order to get a jump on the competition, Microsoft pushed it’s Xbox 360 product line out the door faster than it should have. The legacy of this is that over 30 percent of these products have experienced the red ring of death failure. The Xbox 360 is a fragile device full of design and manufacturing mistakes.
It’s cooling system is marginally effective with absolutely no extra capacity to speak of. When it does overheat, one or more of it’s design ‘bugs’ spring to life and eventually kills your machine. If you wish to prolong the operational life of your Xbox, you will have to baby it and keep it cool.
How you go about keeping your Xbox 360 cool is the topic of this article.
While you may not intentionally block the ventilation openings, there are several ways in which you may do this unknowingly. These involve placing the Xbox 360 on soft shaggy surfaces such as beds, sofas, rugs or pillows.
Make sure that the surrounding environment of the Xbox is well ventilated. What this means is that cabinets, bookcases, racks, or any other confined spaces are not a home for the Xbox. Taking care to keep ventilation ports open while placing the machine in a confined space where air can’t reach it makes no sense. This type of mistake is very common since most people tend to place things in a way that saves space.
Another tip is to stand the Xbox on its side which exposes more of it’s surface area to the surrounding air. You may also want to point a small fan at your console.
Keep the Xbox away from any sources of heat such as heaters, heat vents, radiators, stoves, furnaces, other electronics such as amplifiers. In addition to these obvious sources, be careful not to place it next to a window that gets direct sunlight.
In addition to keeping the Xbox cool, it is important to make sure that the power adapter or power brick is getting proper ventilation. Setting the power brick on the floor is a very natural thing to do. But if it is on a heavy carpet, this can interfere with the currents of air flow needed for cooling. Keep the power adapter cool by moving it up off the floor onto a hard level surface.
The above suggestions are preventative measures that should be taken when your Xbox 360 is brand new. However, it wouldn’t hurt to try them if you’ve experienced the red ring of death for the first time. Hopefully the heat build up caused the Xbox to shut down before any real damage could be done.
