Like most people who enjoy playing video games, I was very excited whenever I first got my Xbox 360. As a matter of fact, I stood outside of a Target store overnight in the cold just to be one of the first people that owned the system. I can’t tell you the number of hours that I spent enjoying the games and playing them over and over until I mastered each and every one of them. Unfortunately, the joy that I found in my 360 was somewhat limited because soon, the red ring of death began to appear.
Whenever an Xbox 360 is working properly, four green lights will surround the power button in order to make the unit look cool in general and to allow you to know that all is well. There are times, however, when those green lights disappear and they are replaced by a series of three red lights which circle the power button. This is what is commonly known as the red ring of death and it certainly does spell the death of your Xbox as you know it. Often, this problem seems to be irreversible and it can be one of the most frustrating things that a gamer can experience.
Although a new 360 may be under warranty, there are several different reasons why you may not want to send it in for repair. First of all, if you have done anything to the 360 in order to modify it or have added external devices to keep it cool, you will have voided the warranty altogether. You may also have to do without your Xbox for several weeks until it is returned to you and this can be rather frustrating. Fortunately, there are some ways that the problem can be handled on your own.
The red ring of death is generally brought on by a problem with heat inside of the system. It is thought that the solder which holds some of the components in place within the system was either put into place incorrectly or the wrong solder was used altogether. Before you go doing something foolish to your system that may totally destroy it without any hope of ever repairing it, make sure you know what you’re doing. There are some excellent tutorials that are available online which will walk you through the entire process.
