Can you play PlayStation 2 games on a PlayStation 3 console?

I wanted to play a PS2 game but, don’t have PS2 game console anymore. I remembered that You could play PS1 games on the PS2 game console and wondered if you could play PS1 & PS2 games on a PS3 game console because, I would have ended up buying a PS3 at some point but, if it could play PS2 games I could save some money by not buying the PS2 and just buy a PS3. Just wanted to know if I just buy the PS3 or both of them.

  1. You can only play it on one generation PS3, and that’s the first one. The first one is the fat one that has a card reader and 4 USB slots.

PS1 games will play fine though, off a disc or as DLC.

  2. You can play PS1 games on a PS3. You can’t play PS2 games on any of the newer PS3 systems. If you find an older system(short easy answer is if has 4 USB ports on the front it should play PS2 games).

  3. Some models of PS3 (older ones) are backwardly compatible with PS2 games, but no current models.

PS3 Forum member says “The earliest PS3 models could play PS2 games, with the high-end model doing so with actual PS2 hardware in the console, and the low-end one doing so with software emulation, which is less compatible. Then later PS3s all used software emulation or simply didn’t support PS2 games. All current models do not play PS2 games at all” I believe this is accurate. So the trick is to find a used console that will do what you want. Search online for a grid/graph of which will and will not play PS2s.
