When Nintendo launched the Wii, it’s latest gaming console, many parents took notice of the benefits of having their children take a much more active role in the video games that were normally played sitting on the sofa. Everyone from women to children starting to wonder if the Wii could help them lose a few pounds, while still having fun. All types of ages and people from children to adults there have been managing to shed a few pounds by playing games on the Nintendo Wii Console.

British researchers conducted a study that showed that playing the Nintendo Wii helped burn more calories than the average traditional sit at home video game console. The study on six boys and five girls aged thirteen to fifteen who played both Microsoft’s XBOX 360 and the Nintendo Wii Console found that the children burned more calories per hour on the Wii. The children burned an average of 72 calories per hour whilst playing a racing game on the XBOX 360. Whereas, whilst playing a tennis game on the Nintendo Wii Console, the children burned 179 calories per hour and playing a boxing game resulted in burning 174 calories per hour. Obviously the real life counterparts burn more calories but it is an active step in the right direction, especially for children.

Seeing the console was designed for adults initially it is no surprise that adults have cottoned on to the fitness craze. An example of adults using the Nintendo Wii Console to lose weight is Mickey DeLorenzo, a computer programmer from Philadelphia who lost nine pounds in six weeks due to playing the Wii for half an hour every day!

Nintendo has even released a game called Wii Fit, which is one of the most important exercise games in the Wii revolution. The game works in conjunction with the now, infamous, Nintendo Balance Board, which is a small device shaped like a bathroom scale to measure weight and centre of balance. Once the user has entered their height, the game calculates the players body mass index which then allows players to track their progress, as well as taking fitness tests which really helps for motivation!. The game has four different categories for games that are offered which are yoga, balance, aerobics, and strength training.
