PS3 compatibility question.?

I am planning on getting a PS3, but I know they no longer support PS2 titles. Is there any way to make the PS3 backwards compatible without voiding the warranty? I am tech savvy, but I don’t want to break the terms of the warranty. I would like to know because I have a lot of PS2 games that I still play and the PS3 games are more expensive, so it will take a while to build a collection.

Also, I know there are devices to transfer memory data from memory cards, can I transfer the data and play the game, too?

  1. No, you cannot mod a non-backwards compatible PS3 to play PS2 games. You would have to buy a second hand or refurbished old PS3. The 60GB is the best one, or the `older` 80GB with four usb ports that originally came in a bundle with MGS4 or Motorstorm.

But if you are buying a new 80GB or Slim, then you won’t be able to play PS2 games, you’ll have to keep your PS2 to play them:)

You may be able to use one of those devices to transfer your PS2 game saves, but you will not be able to play the PS2 games on a new PS3:)

  2. The PS3 slim currently doesn’t support PS2 games. The only models of PS3 that do are the launch models, I believe. In order to play a PS2 game on a PS3, they pretty much had to install a PS2 inside the PS3. Somewhere I read that sony has a patent for software emulation to run PS2 games on a PS3, but I can’t remember where I read it.

I don’t think you can save PS2 games to the PS3 hard drive without modding the PS3.

  3. the download that others are referring to are for the PS3s that already are backwards compatible. downloading it to a non-backwards compatible PS3 will do NOTHING but take up space on your hard drive! it will NOT make your PS3 play PS2 games!

“If a PLAYSTATION 3 is not backward compatible, you will not be able to add this function through any hardware (i.e., changing the hard disk drive) or software (i.e., updates, homebrew) upgrades or modifications.”

that came DIRECTLY from Sony’s own website: [url is not allowed].

yes, there is a way to transfer PS2 saves from a PS2 memory card to a PS3, but since you can’t play PS2 games on a non-BC PS3, there’s no point in even trying to find the item you’d need. it would just be a waste of money.
